Subject:history of Carol Beach

Hello,
We are looking to move to Carol Beach and are wondering if anyone has any information on the history of it. We heard "rumors" it was originally built to be the "Newport, Rhode Island" of the midwest. Is there any truth to that story? Also, we heard part of Lake Shore Drive dropped into Lake Michigan in the 60's. Is that true? I haven't been able to find any history on the area, and would love to hear it.

Subject:Ladies to learn Mah Jongg

Every summer I live aboard a boat in the Prairie Harbor Marina at the south end of 1st Court. I'm looking for a group of ladies who would like to play Mah Jongg - I can teach at no cost. It is a wonderful tile game that you will enjoy. It keeps seniors minds active. I'm 65 and I regularly play with 60-80 year olds in the winter in Florida. I would like to play during the day. Please send me an email or call me at 312-343-3174.

Thank you - Sandra

Subject:Gypsy Moth Update %26 Info

Gypsy Moth supression spraying in part of Carol Beach was COMPLETED around 6:15am today, May 22 by a small low flying yellow aircraft with 3 nozzles on each wing, spraying BTK, a bacteria naturally occuring in soil, and not dangerous for people or pets, but not good for gypsy moths to eat. You may have noticed a plane flying earlier than that, higher up.... that was the spotter plane watching the spray plane.

They ONLY sprayed THIS year in areas where individuals CALLED Pleasant Prairie LAST year and told them they have a LOT of them (like my neighbors %26 I did last year)...so if you are inundated with caterpillars in a few weeks, please call and let them know about it.

Spraying will not eliminate all moths, but will hopefully keep the numbers down. If you see a lot of caterpillars in a few weeks, like I did last year, perhaps 500-1000 a day at eye level on your oak trees especially, you can kill them by picking them off of the trees at eye level and putting them into a bucket of soapy water (the DNR recommended way), or wearing rubber gloves and squishing them, like I resorted to last year. They squish easily. Otherwise, each female caterpillar turns into a moth and can later lay an egg mass of 500-1000 eggs in each mass that will hatch next year. They eat the leaves off of trees, which if there are too many of them, will stress the tree enough to kill it. If you see a lot of them, you can tie burlap around some trees and they will congregate there under the burlap, which makes them real easy to find %26 eliminate them. (I bought burlap at JoAnn's Fabrics, last year.)

More info at gypsymoth.wi.gov

(I was asked to help Kevin Meyers, Park Foreman of Pleasant Prairie %26 Dan Treloar in determining when they hatched a couple of weeks ago, and today, determining wind and temperature at about 4:45am and 5:45am., which is how I learned more about this stuff.)

Subject:Gypsy Moths

5-15-09: Kevin Meyers from Pleasant Prairie has been in contact with me about the Gypsy Moth spraying. About a week ago, I reported to him that the egg masses in Carol Beach hatched. He provided me with temperature and wind velocity devices so that I can report those readings at 4:30am when the plane is making a decision to spray or not. The spraying should happen within the next week or two, probably. The website gypsymoth.wi.gov may predict the spraying one day ahead, but cancellations could happen due to temperature and windspeed. It is spraying a bacteria called BTK, that is not dangerous to people or dogs, but is not good for gypsy moths to eat. It is recommended to stay inside during spraying, though.
